College should not be a continuation of high school. You will face a whole new world and you’re going to be faced with many decisions. You must plan everything carefully and prepare yourself for the experience ahead of you.
Do not wait until the last minute to apply for scholarships and grant money for college. Securing money in advance is the safest way to approach things. Come up with a good system for monitoring deadlines and be sure to turn in applications as early before deadlines as possible.
Learn your class schedule and where the courses are held well before you actually start. Try and figure out how long it’ll take for you to get to each class, and use that to plan accordingly. Locate different places on your campus so that you can become familiar fast.
Research the location of the admissions staff and pay them a visit prior to selecting a school. This will allow you to find out if there are scholarships available that are school specific. Lots of institutions offer students generous scholarships. Visiting with admissions officers can help you get all of the college funding that you need.
Make sleep a priority. When you are in college, it is easy to pull all-nighters for parties and classes and homework, but you need your rest. If you aren’t sleeping enough, you’ll be irritable and forget what you’ve learned; not the way to enjoy college!
Make general ed part of your first semester. If you need a class to graduate and you don’t want to take, take it earlier so that you can get into classes you enjoy later on. It would be a bummer to be the token senior in a gen-ed class of freshmen four years down the road.
