College brings about changes, and you can be in control of those changes. It can often be hard, but by taking advantage of the great tips that follow, you will have what it takes to succeed.
Before you make your final decision on which college to attend, thoroughly research your intended major and career choice. This will help you set the foundation for your college choice in the future. If necessary, schedule an appointment with the director of admissions.
Where you study matters. Your dorm is not typically a good place to study. Look for a quieter area that is free from interruptions. Study areas in the libraries exist for this very reason. If you have to study in the dorm, get yourself some headphones.
Take a general education class your first semester. If there is a class that you are not looking forward to that is required for your degree, take it early. That way, you won’t have to deal with it later when you are taking more enjoyable classes. You might not feel good about being a senior in a freshman packed class.
You aren’t in a house anymore where someone’s going to clean up after you or cook for you. Be sure you’re eating things that are healthy, that you keep your things tidy, and you sleep enough. Schedule equal time for attending classes, studying, recreation and taking care of yourself. A stressful lifestyle and poor nutrition can lead to illness.
Most people have heard about the “freshman 15,” but you can easily stay away from it if you don’t overload on carbs. Avoid eating unhealthy foods. Instead, eat fresh produce and whole grain foods. Avoid an entirely high protein diet as this is unbalanced and may cause health problems for you.
As you’re aware, college is basically a new world for many students. You need to adopt a responsible attitude, think about your future and focus on your studying if you want to be successful.
